Slain Marine reservist [killed last week] was shot before [in August] in Jurez
EL PASO —The U.S Marine reservist shot and killed in Jurez last week had been shot in Jurez in August, his family confirmed Wednesday.
Lance Cpl. Gustavo Zubia-Lopez, 20, was beaten, shot and killed on Sept. 10 after a minor collision with a Jurez police vehicle.
The body of his cousin’s husband, Victor Hugo Delgado of Jurez, was found alongside Zubia-Lopez.
Mauricio Mauricio-Rodriguez, a Jurez police spokesman, declined to comment about the slayings, citing a pending investigation by the Mexican Federal Justice Department.
Zubia-Lopez’s sister, Tanya Zubia, said Zubia-Lopez was shot five times Aug. 1 after thieves attempted to steal his truck in Jurez.
Zubia-Lopez was taken to Thomason Hospital from a port of entry for treatment of wounds to his stomach, elbow and buttocks, Zubia said.
Thomason officials confirmed at the time of Zubia-Lopez’s shooting that they were treating a U.S. citizen in serious condition who had been the apparent victim of an armed robbery and carjacking.
Zubia said her brother spent two or three days at Thomason.
Last week, Zubia-Lopez was in Jurez to get the brakes on his truck fixed. Zubia-Lopez’s family said they’ve been attempting to retrieve the truck but have been turned away by Jurez police.
Marine Corps officials said Zubia-Lopez was allowed to travel to Jurez because he was not on active duty.
